Imagination Playground es un avanzado concepto de espacio de juego concebido y diseñado por el arquitecto David Rockwell. El objetivo de Imagination Playground es fomentar el juego libre - no dirigido y creativo – del niño, considerado por los expertos como fundamental para su desarrollo intelectual, social, físico y emocional. El juego libre empuja a la creatividad, lo que en un futuro le permitirá ser más imaginativo y tener una mayor capacidad para la resolución de los problemas. 

Imagination Playground es un espacio interactivo, transformable que impulsa a los niños a manipular su entorno y crear su propio espacio de juego utilizando arena, agua y las diferentes piezas que componen el sistema. Gigantes bloques de espuma, colchonetas, carros, telas, y contenedores, permiten a los niños construir explorando un sinfín de posibilidades. 

Imagination Playground trata de cubrir un espectro más amplio de las necesidades lúdicas de los niños utilizando la fantasía y el juego cooperativo, además de las tradicionales carreras, saltos y escaladas. Los niños necesitan estar activos en muchos niveles, y necesitan ejercitar sus mentes, así como sus músculos. Los estudios demuestran que los niños de ocho años que han experimentado variadas formas de jugar con retos diferentes, están mucho mejor preparados para beneficiarse del sistema educativo. 

Las piezas de Imagination Playground se encuentran en coloridos contenedores con ruedas, que recuerda baúles llenos de tesoros. En cada uno de los diez espacios públicos de la ciudad de Nueva York en donde se instaló el verano de 2012, “playworkers” entrenados se encargaban de facilitar la actividad y proporcionar un nivel adicional de seguridad. 

Imagination Playground is a breakthrough play space concept conceived and designed by internationally acclaimed architect David Rockwell. The mission of Imagination Playground is to encourage child-directed, unstructured creative “free play,” the kind of play that experts say is critical to a child’s intellectual, social, physical and emotional development. Free play leads to creative minds, which in turn will lead to greater innovation in all aspects of human endeavor and problem solving. 

Imagination Playground is an interactive, transformable space that prompts children to manipulate their environment and create a play space of their own with sand, water and loose parts. With giant foam blocks, mats, wagons, fabric, and crates at their fingertips, children have the potential to build and explore endless possibilities. 

Imagination Playground addresses a broader spectrum of play needs through opportunities for fantasy and cooperative play, in addition to the traditional running, jumping, and climbing. Kids need to be active on many levels, and they need to exercise their minds as well as their muscles. Research shows that children at the age of eight who have experienced varied and challenging play are considerably better prepared to benefit from ongoing formal education. 

This summer Parks is installing ten Imagination Playground in a Box units throughout New York City, so kids in every borough will have the chance to experiment with this new free play concept! 

The Imagination Playground in a Box is a colorful container on wheels, reminiscent of trunks full of treasures. The sides and top of the boxes reveal a variety of loose parts such as foam blocks, sand and water tools, as well as found items such as tarps, fabric and milk crates, which children use to create their own toys and games. At each site, trained playworkers facilitate activity and provide an additional level of safety.
