El Instituto Marcel Sembat en Sotteville-lès-Rouen tiene la particularidad de estar atravesado por una calle y sus dos partes están conectadas por un edificio puente.
Contiguamente al límite sur de la parcela se ubica un parque público. La escuela se divide en seis edificios de diferentes períodos, que van desde los años 30 a los 90.
El proyecto es una rehabilitación y una ampliación del instituto. La parte más importante del proyecto y la que le da su identidad visual, es la de los nuevos talleres dedicados a la enseñanza de mecánica de motores y vehículos.
Se ha tratado de que el proyecto fuera simple, entendible y fácil, conectando los talleres con el parque, ya que las líneas suaves de su sección se continúan en la pendiente del terreno.
The Marcel Sembat High School in Sotteville-lès-Rouen has the particularity to be crossed by a street and so is separated in two parts reconnected by a bridgebuilding.
A public park is located straight on the south side of the site. The entire school is divided in six buildings of different periods, from 30's to 90's.
The project is a rehabilitation and an extension of the high school. We are presenting here the biggest part of this project, the one that gives his visual identity: the new workshops building. This part of the Marcel Sembat high school is dedicated to technical teaching about motors and vehicles mechanic.
We opted for simple and easy understandable project, include workshops at the park with smooth lines which are connected to the park floor with their declivity.

Esta área exige grandes espacios con alturas y superficies importantes.

Se ha propuesto la demolición de dos edificios y la reorganización de los talleres y los espacios de enseñanza de tecnología industrial.
Todas las funcionalidades relacionadas con los talleres se reunieron en un edificio.
La construcción comienza en el límite del parque y se adapta de forma natural a su topografía mediante el diseño ondulado de su cubierta vegetal, dotada de diferentes curvas y poca altura.
La idea principal de la propuesta ha sido transmitir la unidad y la identidad de la escuela, integrándola y conectándola con el parque a través de sus particulares ramas.
También se ha querido crear un espacio público en torno al cruce de calles, creando una gran plaza en frente del edificio de los talleres nuevos.
Otro de los objetivos de la propuesta era, finalmente, la restauración de los puntos de vista y la transparencia hacia el exterior, así como de las perspectivas hacia el espacio público y los paisajes. Para ello se ha utilizado vidrio y policarbonato translúcido en las fachadas. También se han creado algunos pequeños patios entre los diferentes “brazos” que funcionan como tragaluces.
La unidad entre las dos partes del instituto en el cruce de calles está garantizada con la creación de un nuevo espacio público que estará rodeado de una nueva biblioteca en el lado este.
Esta futura "plaza" será al mismo tiempo un espacio de encuentro, una zona de paseo y la principal vía de acceso a la escuela secundaria.

The building starts at the boundary of the park and fits naturally to the site by the wavy design of its vegetated roof to varying curves and low height. The slight oscillations reveal the fringes of a park in motion in the trees shades.
The main ideas of our proposal are, to find a unity and identity of the school in the whole site, to integrate and connect the high school and the park with the particular shape of the “blades”.
We also wanted to create a public space around the crossing street by making a great plaza in front of the new workshops building.
And finally our purpose was restoring the views and transparency to the outdoors, and perspectives on public space and landscapes. For that we used glass and translucent polycarbonate on the frontages. We also created some little patios between the “blades” to make skylights.
The unity between the two sites around the crossing street is ensured by the creation of a new public space which will be surrounded by a new library oh the east side.
This future "plaza" will be in the same time a meeting space, a walking or restoring area and the main access way to the high school.
