El Centro de Artes Visuales de Dordrecht y el estudio de diseño Carve han invitado recientemente a diez empresas de diseño europeas para desarrollar objetos no convencionales, imaginativos y lúdicos para un nuevo espacio público en la ciudad de Dordrecht (Holanda). Ecosistema Urbano ha participado diseñando el Dordrecht Energy Carousel, un tiovivo generador de energía, de cuyas cuerdas se pretende que se cuelguen niños de todas las edades pertenecientes a los suburbios densamente poblados que rodean la Plaza Governeusplein.

El Dordrecht Energy Carousel contiene un bosque de cuerdas giratorias que se establecen a diferentes alturas. El carrusel está diseñado estratégicamente para que a medida que uno se aleja del centro, las longitudes de las cuerdas se acorten. Esto divide el carrusel en diferentes espacios y grupos de edad, situándose los niños más pequeños hacia el centro, mientras que los niños más altos pueden colgarse en el exterior.

Al pivotar los niños alrededor del carrusel, la energía cinética se libera y se captura a través de la estructura y se almacena en una batería situada debajo del tiovivo. Cuando el sol se pone y la oscuridad se cierne sobre el parque, el carrusel se ilumina con la energía que se almacena durante el día. Los diferentes colores de la luz son determinados por la cantidad de energía que se almacena durante ese día.

The Centre for Visual Arts and Amsterdam design bureau Carve recently invited ten European design firms to develop unconventional, inventive, and playful objects for a new public space in the western Netherlands city of Dordrecht. Responding to the challenge, Spanish architecture firm Ecosistema Urbano designed the Dordrecht Energy Carousel - an energy generating chandelier of hanging ropes meant to engage kids of all ages in the densely populated suburbs surrounding Governeusplein Square.

The Dordrecht Energy Carousel contains a forest of revolving ropes that are set at different heights. The carousel is strategically designed so that as one moves away from the center, the lengths of the ropes become shorter. This divides the carousel into different spaces and age groups, sending younger children towards the center to play while taller, older children can hang on the outside.

As kids swing around on the carousel, kinetic energy is released and captured through the structure and stored in a battery underneath the play site. When the sun sets and darkness looms over the park, the carousel is illuminated using the energy that was stored during the day. The varying colors of light are determined by how much energy was stored up that day.
