Südliche Lohmühleninsel is located in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Berlin. The island is 600 meter long, 100 meter wide, and was sprung up with the booming of state canal and dam during 1845 and 1850. Tan workers improved manufacturing of leathers by using barks (tanning materials) as addictive, and Südliche Lohmühleninsel got its name from this. The island is next to a canal, which makes it part of the boarder between East and West Berlin; it is also part of the inner boarder of the sate when the country was split. After Germany was reunited, former boarder was reformed into a park, which improved the landscape quality of Kreuzberg for its lack of greening area.
Most reconstruction of public greening area on Südliche Lohmühleninsel was finished between 2007 and 2008, which provided a good place of exercises and rest for people at different ages. The large newly-built stadium and sports strip have perfected and made up for the existing island planning.
Design model SÜDLICHE LOHMÜHLENINSEL
SÜDLICHE LOHMÜHLENINSEL is a place liked by people who love enjoying their leisure time, but also a frequently used transit space for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Therefore, key to the planning is to avoid conflicts led by different utilization. Besides, two important issues about the planning, one is to improve landscape quality and make functional reorganization of the entrance, the other is to optimize the roads system and to perfect the connection that leads to Görlitzer Park.
For security reasons and orientation, the density of the existing green had to be balanced. Additional planting is added only in selected areas.
The demands of different users, their targets and their speeds are reflected in surface materials and features arranged on the play ground strip. Bikers, skaters, walkers and other sports participants share the space in slow motion or just pass by on the fast track in the northwest.
The Island Square
The Island Square marks the end of the existing sports band on the southern island, and links also to the northern Island.
The space is intended to be an energetic and multifunctional city space, like a generous entrance plaza which opens up to the northern road and draws people onto the island.
Slight ups and downs of ground on island square offer a reasonable space for entertainment, skating, sliding, and other active sports. In the blue “Sports Sea”, there is area specially designed for rest, relaxing, and sight viewing. There are some small bumps on the blue asphalt ground in surrounding area.
Corridor
Roads along Sports strip will be widened; sidewalk and running lane will be separated. Bollards in the entrance area will slow down bikers who arrive with high speed. The surface designed with large size flag stone tiles underlines the character of a boulevard.
Blue moment
Benches for resting are arranged along the corridor. A large staircase called “blue moment” leads down to the river walk along the water channel. Equipped with wood seats, the staircase forms a more quiet place for sojourn.
Wide steps
By widening steps, and reforming a plot on the river bank into a square, people are provided with a place for rest, sight viewing and feel the quietness. This place will become a new connection between the city and the canal.
Shipping Observation Plattform
The new plan provides extra game possibility for existed stadium and area observation tower. Right at the canal bank, there is a balcony where passing ships are welcomed. Flags mounded on the balcony can move upwards and downwards. By giving ‘flag signas”, children will enjoy and interact with passing ships.
